While jobs are important, they are not the sole concern of most employees. Issues with families and outside engagements need to be taken into account when creating a work schedule. Here are a few tips for managers to keep a happy workforce.


Effective communication is by far the most important role of a successful manager. Employees must know what is expected of them ahead of time to avoid conflict. A good manager is someone who is both personable and easy to talk with while simultaneously being able to lead and direct. Without effective communication, employees will often become disgruntled which will inevitably lead to poor production.

Outside forces can impact workers who may need to take a day off in order to take care of a situation. A draconian approach is not effective during these situations. This responsibility falls both on the manager and the worker who needs to be absent. Make available a way for all employees to communicate with each other easily, whether this is by email, telephone call or social media.

An employee who feels connected and important will more likely care about the business they are working for. Inclusion for all employees means knowing what to expect and how to deal with certain situations when they arise. Often times, employees may have suggestions that could benefit the company as a whole. Effective managers will listen to these suggestions and implement them when necessary. As the old adage goes, two heads are better than one. Nowhere is this truer than in the workplace where different perspectives and viewpoints can have a synergistic effect.

Deal with Problems as they Arise

Managers need to be able to act swiftly and have confidence in themselves. When certain employees start taking advantage of the system, they should be dealt with in a way that alleviates the problem. Often, the best solutions are the simplest. Do not be quick to judge. If an employee habitually shows up late for work or calls in, they should first be given a warning and told what is expected of them. The last resort should be firing the employee, and managers should know when the situation warrants a job termination.
